Sew A Kimono
On Canada Day, I sewed a Kimono...
At an exact 1:4 scale, using a Scale Ruler. Surprisingly, it fits my mannequin. So I dressed him, in a Chinese way. I should make an Obi sometime!
One thing that I am not sure about is ... the dangling part of the kimono sleeves, as well as the underarms, were unclosed (according to my understanding of the Japanese instruction book).
Although it's a scaled version. I did followed the instructions maticuliously (given that I didn't understand Japanese, I spent quite a long time to figure out the illustartions). If you go to Wikipedia and search Kimono, you would see that my scaled kimono has everything except the over-collar, which was too thick for me to sew over the narrow inner-collar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kimono

That's the way Japanese hem the kimono.
This is the book I used. I got it from a store called Little Kyoto (or Little Tokyo) from Kensington Market two years ago.
Very nice illustrations! I can tell that the Author is very experienced becasue her illustrations make sense, even for me. On the other hand, you can tell that I am a visual learner.

Holly somkes...that's so beautiful. Isn't there any sewing festival in toronto ? You should show toronto your work! seriously!
wow!! way to go - it's beautiful!
i believe the sleeve part is supposed to be unclosed. (at least it's open in both of my yukatas.) i once knew the reason but now it escapes me...perhaps to let air in? ;)
I’m one of the editors for www.FaveCrafts.com and Favecraftsblog.com I came across your blog through the Knitty web site and I'm absolutely in love with the work that you do!
We would love to have you as a Guest Blogger on knitting. Anything you are working on currently that you would like to talk about?
Something we have been doing recently is publishing a guest post on the blog alongside a guest project at the main website.
Both are fully attributed of course, and it’s just a fun way to engage both destinations together.
Let me know if you are interested. Respond via email - kyprosise@primecp.com.
Thanks and sorry this post is so long, I couldn't find your contact info anywhere.

You're right about the unclosed sleeves. You use the opening as a sort of pocket.

Hello! Saw your nice kimono. You did a great job, figuring out how to make without reading instructions. They use a long strip of cloth like a scroll to make one, which is usually just the length of each part of a kimono. The shapes of its parts don't have curvy lines.
By the way, I'm a Japanese who living in US. There are two kinds of sleeves for female kimono. Longer one is called "Furisode (Swinging sleeves)" and it is for young maidens. Shorter one, the one you made, is for married women. The book's writer is very famous kimono wearer.
